Experience the premiere of Island the latest work by acclaimed Asian American choreographer, Dana Tai Soon Burgess, that tells the story of Asian immigrants trying to enter America through Angel Island, California, in the early 20th century. This groundbreaking contemporary dance continues Burgess' examination of identity, loss, cultural acceptance and relationships between Americans of various backgrounds and ethnicities.

Island intimately engages the audience in the experience of the Asian immigrants coming to America. The dancers explore the feelings of immigrants feeling trapped between their culture and the new one they're anticipating in America.

The evening's program will also include Hyphen which looks at the experience of being a hyphenated American-Asian Americans, but also other ethnic Americans and multi-racial Americans. Sarah Kaufman, dance critic for The Washington Post, said, "the theatrical and fascinating "Hyphen" shows us a newly confident Burgess, combining video, light, sound and movement with dramatic effect."

Supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
