The performance will feature new works by director Debra Kanter, resident choreographer Tiffany Haughn, CrossCurrents company members, and The A.O. Movement Collective, with performances by Joy of Motion Dance Center's Youth Dance Ensemble Junior and Senior Companies in new works by Heidi Schimpf and Kelly Moss Southall.
Debra Kanter, CrossCurrents Artistic Director, explores the effect of the massive change in the economy, as well as other personal challenges, in Return. Forced by necessity to make difficult decisions, she asked, "What do I really need?" Her response, through the language of dance, was to take pillows, a common symbol of security, comfort, and escape, and manipulate these objects using choreography, improvisation and personal stories.
Tiffany Haughn, resident choreographer, contributes From Within, the documentation of a spiritual journey that in the end declares that the answers lie within us. Haughn states, "At the end of the creative process/spiritual journey, I had not come to any conclusions about religion except for one – that art is my religion, my absolute truth, my savior. I uncovered so many similarities between dance and faith: both have transformative and healing powers; we look to art and religion for enlightenment and self discovery; each of us uncovers personal meaning in both; and finally, faith is every bit as ineffable as the art of creating a dance. And that is where the beauty lies – in the unexplainable."
Colleen Hutchings, CrossCurrents company member, premieres a new solo work, Crossed Vascillation, featuring an original musical score by Nick Bernard. Using clear diagonals and strong pathways, she explores the paths her choices take her on and ultimately, whether she can return to a place she has thought she had left behind.
The A.O. Movement Collective presents excerpts from their new work, 90 ways to Wake from drowning, which will premiere at Joyce Soho in New York on July 30th and 31st. Utilizing a twisting narrative, this evening-length piece bends the genre of epic storytelling into an immediate visceral journey, set amidst a visual wonderland of car crashes, plastic bags, and heavy slow dances. Mixing contact partnering, modern releasing, and detailed gestures with a choreographic approach reminiscent of the lush explosions of action-movies, the piece is a love letter penned in the aesthetics of mess.
to have and to..., choreographed by Tina Fratello, is a glimpse into a prevalent problem that many people are left to struggle with in silence- verbal and mental abuse. While not visible, the wounds caused still run very deep. This piece looks at a woman struggling with a decision. Torn down by the abuse, she must find the courage to either accept her situation or fight for her own worth.
The Joy of Motion Dance Center's Youth Dance Ensemble Junior company will explore the human condition in the premiere of Ignition, choreographed by Heidi Schimpf. What ignites our passions, our desires, and our fears? Is it the connections we make as humans to one another? How does fear of human connection impact us in a positive or negative way? How does our "fight or flight" nature impact our connections to people in relationships? What causes us to put up barriers for deep connection to others? Ignition aims to discover the answers to some of these questions through movement images and gesture.
The Joy of Motion Dance Center's Youth Dance Ensemble Senior Company will be premiering a new work by Kelly Moss Southall, of Dana Tai Soon Burgess and Company.
