Come and be moved by a new world premiere entitled Wallstories from world-renowned choreographer/dancer Nejla Yatkin celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Berlin Wall's removal, featuring music by Pink Floyd and Bach.
The basic idea for this work is to reflect upon what the Wall and its removal meant to Germans, the West and the rest of the world. The Cold War constantly threatened to turn into a devastating atomic war. No place captured this reality more than Berlin, Germany – a divided city on the battlefront between East and West.
As a teenager in Berlin, choreographer/dancer Nejla Yatkin personally felt the threat of imminent conflict. This concern was an ever-present issue in conversations, meetings and demonstrations. The concern was also physically manifest in the form of the Wall itself, which both separated as well as divided the two parts of the city.
Then, abruptly, the Wall came down. The world opened up. People, for the first time in decades, had a chance to communicate, to share, move and get to know each other, without feeling the oppressive threat.
Drawing upon these observations and experiences, the soul of this project concerns the acknowledgement that physical and political boundaries play an important role in an individual as well as a collective's life.
