Energizers Creative Arts Camp 2014
Thanks to the support of a major grant from the DC Children & Youth Investment Trust Corporation, as well as many foundations, corporations and individuals, 100% of our 52 campers attended our seven week Energizers Creative Arts Camp on full scholarship. In addition, 42 teens were hosted on-site through our Energizers Junior Staff program with job training, arts classes and life skills workshops. It was our largest summer camp program ever!
Our Energizers Creative Arts Camp has an intensive concentration on ten different dance forms, plus choices in drumming, tumbling, arts & crafts, garden club and jewelry making. All campers are required to participate in daily academic enrichment sessions and perform in the culminating final performance. The theme of this year’s camp was “The ABCs of Dance” – check out David Dowling’s video from the camp show that showcases the many dance genres that campers learned this year.
Shannon Quinn, Director of Youth Programs and Summer Camp, has developed a strong team of professional artists and artist/counselors who mentor and guide each child ages 4.5-12 to be successful in the final performance. Donna Kearny, Director of the Junior Staff Program, expanded her group of thirty-five participants during the school year to include forty-two teens ages 13 -18 for the summer. Her partner organizations for specialized workshops included Planned Parenthood, Bank on DC, Occasions Catering, The University of Maryland, Slingshot Videos and Go Give Yoga. The Mayor’s DC Summer Youth Employment Program helped to underwrite the honorariums earned by our teens in their job training shifts.
