Hip-Hop Exchange: Brazil and Philadelphia Connect
Two sensational companies from Rio de Janeiro and Philadelphia met for the first time on April 1st sharing heartfelt stories about their backgrounds in a cross-cultural dialogue, followed by a playful dance “battle.” Rennie Harris RHAW from Philadelphia and Companhia Urbana de Danca (CUD) from Rio were each featured companies in our performing series in Spring 2014 and both companies blew the roof off the Edgewood Arts Center in their public performances. Through funding support from the National Education Association Foundation, these companies were brought together for a special introduction and sharing of their common dance language – hip hop. The extraordinary one-day exchange was witnessed by invited guests here on site and broadcast through our partnership with the Artspace Distant Learning project to guests in Minneapolis and Rapid City.
If you didn’t see Companhia Urbana de Danca this past season – be sure to see their one night only performance this November 9th at Dance Place.
The presentations of Rennie Harris RHAW and CUD were supported by the National Education Association Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, National Performance Network’s Performing Americas project, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, MAAF Southern Exposure and John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
