alight dance theater presents two repertory works capturing the complexity of women’s relationships.
Created by Matina Phillips and Eleni Grove, Blue Mountain Express follows four women aboard a train as their stories are revealed and their similarities and differences celebrated. Set to a score of upbeat bluegrass music, Blue Mountain Express premiered at Anacostia Arts Center in 2013.
Women’s Work by Angella Foster imagines a community of strong women in her childhood home of rural Kentucky, inspired by her grandma’s tales of kinship and hard work. The work features original music by Louisville, Kentucky based composer Rob Collier and a massive suspended quilt which Foster constructed and hand-quilted herself over a year’s time. Women’s Work originally premiered at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in 2009 as Foster’s MFA Thesis Project and has been re-staged for alight dance theater.
