An event every day that begins at 7:00pm, repeating indefinitely
Saturday, May 5 at 8pm
Sunday, May 6 at 7pm
An evening-length dance theater work, Wake Up! takes inspiration from the music, dance and themes of Spike Lee’s 1988 film School Daze. Conceived and co-directed by MK Abadoo and Vaughn Midder, this update uses jazz, contemporary, funk, step, tap and West African dance to immerse the audience in a poignant social justice discussion.
“beautifully conceived, consistent in its vocabulary
and masterfully performed.”
– Zvi Gothiener, Artistic Director, Zvi Dance
“I am still in awe…hours after the performance.”
– DC Metro Theater Arts
Wake Up! reimagines Lee’s 1980s examination of collegiate youthful Black culture at an Historically Black College (HBCU) with the contemporary realities of African American students attending an Historically White College. Abadoo invites audiences as VIP guests at a fictitious campus’s homecoming house party, step competition, fashion show and open mic poetry slam. Wake Up! interweaves dance and dialogue, allowing for a poignant display of social dance as a way to underpin candid dialogue of contemporary social justice issues.
