Founded in 1983 to share traditional African dance with audiences of all ages, KanKouran West African Dance Company returns to Dance Place for their annual celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Under the leadership of Co-Founder and Artistic Director Assane Konte, this groundbreaking company presents its new work BOLO (Bridge of Togetherness).
BOLO, which means “Bridge of Togetherness” in Wolof, will take audiences on an unbelievably breathtaking journey into the influence that African dance and culture has had on contemporary dance styles and how today’s choreographers are now reaching back to bring an African influence into their work.
The concert will feature KanKouran’s Senior Company, Junior Company, Children’s Company and the KanKouran Community Class participants. Along with KanKouran’s Artistic Director Assane Konte, choreographers include Princess Mhoon, Founder and Director of the Princess Mhoon Dance Institute and life-long KanKouran Senior Company members Kwame Shaka Opare, Ateya Ball-Lacy and Sue Ann Forde.
