Class Descriptions

Explore the richness of African Dance traditions from Guinea, Mali and Senegal.

This class uses pop music to disrupt the atmosphere of traditional ballet classes. All experiences, gender expressions, and bodies are welcome as we tap into the strength and precision that ballet can develop.

We hold a class during the first hour of each session to help newcomers and experienced dancers alike develop and deepen their skills and understanding of Contact Improvisation. This leads into a jam. The 2-hour jam is a safe space for spontaneous dance connections. On the first Sunday of each month we practice an “Underscore,” a kind of combined class and jam that takes up the entire session.

People of all levels of movement experience are welcome. We especially invite people new to Contact Improv to join the class for the first hour, but all are welcome to participate in the jam only, as well. When participating in the class, and on Underscore days, it’s important to arrive at the start time.

This class draws on House Dance as lived practice, providing space for curiosity, creativity and choice. Participants will be guided through continuous movement, finding periods of both personal and collective expression. The class includes a warm-up series as well as progressions, and culminates in a rigorous movement study.

Learn different Cuban popular and social dances such as Cuban Son, Casino and a lively and fun group dance called Rueda de Casino. Popularly known as “Cuban salsa,” the classes use popular music from the island including Songo, Changüí, Cubaton and Timba.

Heels dance class is an innovative dance experience, focusing on building confidence and allowing dancers to discover new possibilities. All classes will focus on movement across the floor and choreography that welcomes dancers from all levels and backgrounds. Dancers are encouraged to have experience dancing in heels of their choice. Taking the class without heels is also welcomed.

Devin’s contemporary fusion class is a non-competitive space that
explores intricate rhythms, gestural work, musicality, improvisation,
and storytelling. Dancers can expect an eclectic movement
vocabulary that spans Eurocentric and non-Eurocentric dance genres.

This space is designed to support the artistic development of movers
in a safe, accessible, and uplifting environment.

Experience a wide range of dance and movement techniques including Laban/Bartinieff, Horton, Social Dance and Yoga, using floorwork, gesture phrases and combinations.

Rooting the Dance Hip Hop Series brings together a diverse and multi-talented group of women artists who embody Hip Hop in the DMV. Pulling from their cultural roots and stories of transformation within Hip Hop culture, these artists will share Hip Hop dance as a form of community connection, soul connection, and joy. This Series is open to all levels and experiences!

If you are down to move, groove, and turn up Black Fusion is the class for you! This class is centered around the exploration of Black and Afrocentric movement such as, Afrobeats, Hip-Hop, Step, Soca, Majorette, Baltimore/Jersey Mix and more. Styles rotate every two weeks.

In this series of Yoga for Dancers classes, we will enter into mindful explorations of our bodies through the vocabulary of yoga. We’ll slow down, delve into interoception, experiment with what it means to move without an audience, and use the specific work of our physical practice to access fuller states of awareness.
