April 16-18, 2027
LIMINAL (LMNL) celebrates dance film and projection mapping as powerful mediums for capturing the unspoken essence of our bodies, communities, and shared humanity. Featuring artists whose interdisciplinary practices push the boundaries of Dance Cinema, the festival highlights work that reflects movement’s profound ability to connect, transform, and reveal.
Rooted in the concept of “liminality”—the threshold between one state and another—the festival embraces works that exist in the in-between spaces: between body and image, tradition and innovation, presence and memory.
LMNL seeks to champion voices from around the world while highlighting the incredible talent of the DMV region, creating a platform where local and international artists converge to explore new dimensions of movement on screen.
After an extraordinary inaugural festival that brought together 70 films from 18 countries, LIMINAL Dance Film Festival returns to Dance Place for its second season, April 16–18, 2027.
LIMINAL celebrates artists working at the intersections of dance, film, technology, and interdisciplinary performance, artists who use the moving body and moving image to challenge how we see, experience, and understand dance on screen.
Over three days, Dance Place will once again become a gathering place for filmmakers, choreographers, performers, designers, and audiences from the DMV and around the world. Through dance cinema, screenings, installations, live performance, projection, conversation, and unexpected encounters, LIMINAL creates space for work that lives between forms and imagines what dance on screen can become.
Submissions open October 5, 2027!
Filmmakers and dance artists from around the world are invited to submit their work through FilmFreeway and become part of LIMINAL 2027.
Save the dates. Share your work. Meet us at the intersection of dance, film, and beyond.
The LIMINAL Dance Film Festival is directed and produced by Dance Place Resident Company, Orange Grove Dance, under the artistic leadership of Colette Krogol and Matt Reeves. As artists living and working at the intersections of dance, design, and film, their vision animates the festival with a rare blend of creativity, innovation, and interdisciplinary depth.
For Krogol and Reeves, LIMINAL represents a long-held dream, one that expands the space for artists who blur boundaries between movement and media. Much like Orange Grove Dance’s acclaimed dance films and their annual Summer Intensive, the festival reflects their belief that film, media, and bold programming can transform how artists make work and how audiences encounter dance in everyday life.
