In 2014, Dance Place was awarded a leading $500,000 grant from the Kresge Foundation to support the creation of the 8th St Arts Park and Art on 8th programming. It is an honor to be profiled nationally from amongst the Foundation’s impressive arts & culture funding portfolio.

According to Kresge Foundation’s press release, “The studies describe how key stakeholders – residents, nonprofits, developers, and local government – worked together to help invigorate neighborhoods using local creative assets as drivers of positive change. The results are compelling examples of Creative Placemaking – the integration of arts, culture and resident-engaged design into community development. The process has helped the neighborhoods address systemic barriers facing low-income residents, and been a bulwark against the displacement that sometimes occurs when rising property values in rebounding neighborhoods price out longtime residents.”

The foundation intends that, “lessons from the case studies can help planners, citizens and developers embrace policies and practices that foster equitable and sustained development in cities across the U.S.”

We send our thanks to the Kresge Foundation, dedicated stakeholders who participated in interviews, videographer David Dowling and researchers Griff Coleman, Jim Barton and Kitty Overton for their hard work in creating these materials.

Dance Place’s 8th St Arts Park is in the midst of its inaugural season May – September 2017 with daily free cultural, recreational and gardening programs. Now in its fourth season, our Thursday Art on 8th music series at the Monroe St. Market continues to enliven the Arts Walk and Studios. We are proud to remain a heartbeat on 8th St Northeast with our prolific performances, classes and youth programs.
