LIMINAL (LMNL) celebrates dance film and projection mapping as powerful mediums for capturing the unspoken essence of our bodies, communities, and shared humanity. Featuring artists whose interdisciplinary practices push the boundaries of Dance Cinema, the festival highlights work that reflects movement’s profound ability to connect, transform, and reveal.
Rooted in the concept of “liminality”—the threshold between one state and another—the festival embraces works that exist in the in-between spaces: between body and image, tradition and innovation, presence and memory.
LMNL seeks to champion voices from around the world while highlighting the incredible talent of the DMV region, creating a platform where local and international artists converge to explore new dimensions of movement on screen.
The LIMINAL Dance Film Festival is directed and produced by Dance Place Resident Company, Orange Grove Dance, under the artistic leadership of Colette Krogol and Matt Reeves. As artists living and working at the intersections of dance, design, and film, their vision animates the festival with a rare blend of creativity, innovation, and interdisciplinary depth.
For Krogol and Reeves, LIMINAL represents a long-held dream, one that expands the space for artists who blur boundaries between movement and media. Much like Orange Grove Dance’s acclaimed dance films and their annual Summer Intensive, the festival reflects their belief that film, media, and bold programming can transform how artists make work and how audiences encounter dance in everyday life.
The heart of the festival.
LMNL offers dance filmmakers a dedicated home in the nation’s capital to share their work with an engaged and diverse audience. We celebrate the power of movement and the human body on camera, honoring cinematic works that capture the depth, emotion, and physical poetry of dance on film.
Dance film has the power to expand beyond the theater, spilling across buildings, landscapes, and unexpected places. This category showcases works that fuse movement and architecture, activating city spaces with projection mapping to reimagine how dance interacts with the DC City landscape.
A space for the unclassifiable. This category invites submissions of dance-based media installations and interdisciplinary works that don’t fit neatly into the other two categories, but that still embody the transformative intersection of dance, design, and film.
THE BELOW SCHEDULE IS AN OUTLINE OF WHAT PARTICIPANTS & PASS HOLDERS CAN EXPECT FOR THE WEEKEND.
The full festival schedule will be announced after the final submission deadline and once all filmmakers have been notified of their submission status.
