Exquisite Frame Applications are Open!

Applications are now closed!

Exquisite Frame is a digital performance series intended to directly engage ‘early-mid’ career movement artists within the DC-Maryland-Virginia region.

Curated and hosted by Dance Place AIR Britta Joy Peterson and guest-curator/host Rebecca A. Ferrell, artists will be presented by Dance Place in a broadcast that is free to the public on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 6:30pm.

Exquisite Frame is a forum for experimentation, exposure, and exchange. We invite new, short 3-5 minute pieces that:
a) play within and push up against ordinary and exquisite.
b) leverage the precarious potential of what’s possible within the digital platform.
c) query within quantities and qualities of risk, rigor, and relevance.
d) are created exquisitely for this specific frame. Works may spring out of past, current, or new veins of inquiry, and should be submitted as stand-alone, new works for premiere in this forum.
e) are 3-5 minutes in length.

The points above serve as prompts, provocations, as well as the curatorial framework through which works will be selected.

Up to 5 artists will be selected. Priority for this iteration will be given to artists who have not yet been presented in “Exquisite Frame”.

Submission Parameters:
• Dance-based artists living in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia who are not currently enrolled in an undergraduate program of study.
• 3-5-minute works crafted to premiere via digital platform (specific platform to be determined based on the best interest of the selected works). This may be live, pre-recorded, etc. We encourage you to think dynamically!
• The Artist should own rights to any music utilized in the final work.

Selected works will be due two weeks prior to the event. Works may be submitted as pre-recorded footage, a screen recording of works intended to be performed live, or via a different video file depending on the nature of the work.

Dance Place believes that Black people, Indigenous people, people of color, people in the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities and women must be centered in the work we do. Hence, we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or who are members of other historically and systemically marginalized communities.

Artists are responsible for the creation of their own digital content, including filming and editing, if applicable. Dance Place will provide transcription service for all pre-recorded videos, and ASL interpretation for the live event. Artists proposing “live” presentations are encouraged to consider how to incorporate accessibility into their performance.

Deadline for performance proposals is 11:59pm Friday, May 7, 2021. Artists will be notified of their selection status within two weeks.

Selected artists will receive $120.00 USD for their participation.
